SkyView Academy believes all students can be leaders. Sometimes, leadership is mistaken for the loudest or most confident voice in the room. However, research and experience reveals that productive and effective leadership also requires organizational skills, the ability to listen, the capacity to reflect, commitment, etc. We offer students different avenues to discover their best selves through the following programs:
National Honor Society Page
NHS is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921. Students in their Junior and Senior year who earn and maintain a GPA of 3.75 or higher are eligible. Sophomore students will receive invitations to participate in NHS during the Spring semester. Requirements include 10 additional hours of community service above SVA requirements (20 total per year) and regularly scheduled meetings. Ambassadors are the face of our school for prospective students and their families. The role of an ambassador includes but is not limited to, educating families about our traditions and daily student life. Ambassadors are always welcoming, positive, enthusiastic, helpful and have great communication skills. Ambassadors are selected annually through an application and interview process.
Students are trained in relevant, targeted tutoring skills, stressing the importance of learning and implementing the code of ethics, and fosters a professional attitude in tutoring services, and is applicable across disciplines. Students will learn tutoring ‘best practices’ including: understanding tutoring procedures, steps for successful tutoring sessions, questioning techniques, listening skills, tutorial responsibilities and ethics, using praise effectively, verbal and nonverbal communication skills, critical thinking skills and learning preferences. Students will utilize these skills through individual and group tutoring in their chosen discipline; Math and Science, English and History or World Language Interested students should contact Mr. Schuman at kschuman@svak12.org.
In conjunction with the Student Council, students can self-select to participate in Spirit Squad. This student group organizes special events to unite students in their senior year. Events are coordinated and facilitated entirely by students with adult support. As students rise to higher grade levels, classes coordinate more events. Past senior class events include back-to-school pool parties, lock-ins, and senior trips. Students develop leadership skills by planning, doing, and reflecting. These students play a unique role in how students experience senior year. Interested students should contact the High School Office. Interested students, please contact Mr. Lenderink at tlenderink@svak12.org.
Elected students convene weekly to discuss common concerns, organize events, make decisions and solve school related problems. Students typically focus on social related events that help unite the school in a positive way. Examples of events include school dances, assemblies, pep rallies, homecoming and spirit days. Participating students have the opportunity to affect how the average student feels about high school and earn community service hours. Interested students should contact Mr. Johnson at tjohnson@svak12.org.
