HS and College Counseling

At SkyView Academy we offer a holistic approach to counseling. Students have the same counselor throughout their entire high school experience which allows us develop deep, meaningful relationships with students and to know them both academically and socially. We believe this benefits students as it consistently leads to increased attention, care, and success while supporting our vision and mission.

We are Here to Improve the Lives of our Students

The national average of student to counselor ratio is approximately 470-1. The recommended average by the American School Counselor Association is 250-1. We offer a 175-1 ratio so if a student needs support we are here for them.

College Counseling

As a college preparatory school, we are committed to helping students and parents/guardians with college planning. Our curriculum is designed to meet college admissions requirements so our students can pursue the college of their choice that best fits their goals and prepare for life beyond high school.

Students

We begin our work with students in their freshman and sophomore year with career exploration. Juniors are provided focused workshops on topics such as college searches, creating an initial interest list, letter of recommendation and college essay writing. We also connect students to SAT prep courses during the spring of junior year. Senior year workshops include narrowing the college list, how/when to apply to colleges, supplemental essay writing, Common Application and scholarship search. Counselors meet with each student to discuss college readiness and we encourage students to stop by anytime to speak with their counselor. Asking questions is a great thing!

Workshop sessions are supplemented with college visits. Individual colleges are scheduled to speak to interested students in a small group setting. In addition, our counselors organize a College Fair each fall, inviting colleges from across the country that our students have expressed interest in applying to. Finally, we offer day trips to nearby colleges where students have an opportunity to take a tour, meet admission representatives, observe, campus/college life, and learn more about what each college offers.

Parents/Guardians

Parent/guardian workshops offer support throughout the year. Workshop topics include an introduction to the college process, financial aid, Naviance access (a comprehensive college and career readiness solution that helps align student strengths and interests to post secondary goals), and college search. We encourage parents to email, call or schedule in-person appointments to discuss their child’s progress or answer general questions.
